Pietro Metastasio: The Poet’s Life Behind the Curtain

Pietro Metastasio is one of the most influential librettists who shaped the world of 18th-century opera. However, less is known about the personal stories, decisions, and relationships that influenced his work and were at the origin of many of his compositions. This evening will offer a glimpse “behind the curtain,” looking at Metastasio not only as a creator but also as a man with his own, often dramatic, story.

The program will focus on moments in Metastasio’s life that were of fundamental importance to his work. These include his close relationship with the singer Marianna Bulgarelli, which played a significant role in his artistic and personal growth. Some episodes connected with their story are so dramatic that they resemble situations familiar from his librettos.

Arias set to his texts will accompany the individual episodes of this story and bring them to life through music. The concert will thus offer a broader perspective on Metastasio and allow the audience to experience his work through the events that shaped him as a person. The concert will take place at Jaroslavice Chateau, a 16th-century structure protected as a cultural monument.
