Concert at Uherčice Castle: Koller Sings Kryl
The festival concert at Uherčice Castle pays a special tribute to Karel Kryl—the bard with a guitar and a voice of conscience, whose legacy remains as relevant today as ever. The turbulent history of the 20th century, deeply etched into the landscape of the border region, calls for a remembrance of his songs—right here, where history unfolded not only in textbooks but in people’s lives. The concert will be the only performance of this unique project, commissioned by the Prague Sounds festival to mark Kryl’s double anniversary in 2024.
Tickets for the bus can be purchased HERE.
(The bus departs from the Znojmo City Theater at 6:30 p.m. Return to the same location after the concert.)
Event description
David Koller will perform a selection of songs spanning Kryl’s entire creative career—from early existential ballads through iconic songs of the 1960s to those written in exile and after 1989. The intimate, acoustic arrangements created especially for this occasion highlight the power of Kryl’s words and his timeless message.
The concert will thus be not only a musical experience but also a reminder of the values Kryl championed in his lyrics—freedom, responsibility, and the courage to call things by their proper names. The setting of Uherčice Castle lends itself to powerful symbolism: here, music bridges generations while opening space for reflection on a past that should not be forgotten.
Performers:
David Koller – guitar, vocals
Michal Pelant – guitars, vocals
Samuel Barcík – bass guitar
Adam Koller – drums
Vít Halška – percussion
Martin Kroupa – Hammond organ, piano
Karel Kryl (1944 – 1994)
If we perceive folk songs not as artifacts frozen in a museum, but as a continuous process in which generations pass on to one another the most precious elements of a nation’s cultural memory, then the best testament to an artist is when his compositions live on freely, independent of his person. When people sing them around campfires—people who may not even know Kryl’s name—they unwittingly confirm that his work is immortal. Karel Kryl is one of the few who has achieved this in our country.
